Pay!!!!

Postby biker » Tue Sep 08, 2009 11:54 am

Anybody prepared to discuss what sort of pay they are getting??

I do 38wks, 32.5hrs and get £12600 actual pay. Love the school, staff are great.

There is a CS advertised in a school for £17600 (actual pay 39wks 32.5hrs) sort of near to me, though this would mean a fair bit of traveling, is it worth it? The school is apparently soon to become an academy joining with other schools in the area, what will this do to existing CS in these schools???

Is our pay getting better or do we still get the sh.....y end of the stick.

Hi
You're not doing too bad. Cover Supervisors in my school start on £11,900 (roughly) and do 39 wks plus 5 Inset days and work 37 hours per week.

Is the £17,600 pro rata or real money? If it's real money it's really good, as for Academies, I don't know any C/S's who work in them but I would think it would be similar to any other school (depending of course on what schools are merging).

Hope that helps.

Hi
Sorry about late reply!

The CS staff I line manage are in a very similar position to yourself. They are paid on a low payscale and our future partner school (we will be an academy by Sept 2010) are paid on the higer rate you mentioned. I raised this issue on their behalf at a recent academy meeting. I was told that the Academy is 'self funded' so reading between the lines they will set the pay scale. Now I dont think any new company can change pay and conditions for two years but I could be wrong. To be fair the academy sponsors were very opn about things and seemed concerned, as I pointed out, that a brand new CS being interviewed this week for the CS post will be being paid £5000 a year more than one of my ladies who has 6 years experience!

Also the reason our partner school can pay so much is due to the fact they have funding to raise behaviour standards! Worth thinking about!

Hi

Ive just started as a cover supervisor at a school in Milton Keynes. my wages(!!!) for a 32.5 hr week 38weeks per year are £12,909. which by your accounts is good!!! i've struggled since recieving my first pay cheque to accept that i am expected to deliver a professional job, with NO training, and then to plug any gaps the 'leaders' deem suitable for me and my 3 colleagues. These include admin - i am not an office worker! - they would not place an administrator in front of a class of 30 kids and expect them to take the lesson! also includes taking displays down - which we were informed by the secretary that 'the naughty kids usually do that'! my point of issue is that on the money we are paid as Cover Supervisors (which i accept as i want ot do the job) but i do not accept that my time when not covering is there for my employers to use as and how it suits them...i am now in conflict with my 'team leaders' as i am being expected to undertake senior management roles in 'learning walks'. and on my unliveable wage i am not prepared to offer the school flexibility!!

i feel very bitter at the lack of liveable wage for the return of a professional role and have looked into other employment routes - agencies provide cover supervisors between £85-100 per day! a bit of a difference!!!

With regard to being asked/told to undertake duties that are normally carried out by other members of staff ( who get paid more to do those same tasks), you could refer to your job description - your pay grade is determined by the tasks/activities that are in your JD. You can ask your Union Rep for advice as well. If management insist that you carry out tasks for which you are not paid ( in your JD ), you have a legal right to request ( and get! ) a review of your JD - they can then include those tasks in the JD if they want you to continue doing them. The JD would then be reviewed and re-evaluated by your County HR Dept ( not school management), and a new ( higher ) pay grade allocated. It is an idea to take Union advice though prior to embarking on this process, because as I am sure we are all aware, management can be very good at 'wriggling' if your request involves more money!
At my school we are currently trying to get our JD reviewed to include all the 'extra duties' we undertake on a regular basis eg differentiating cover work where the teacher has failed to do so (and many other things!) - these tasks attract more points, which equal more cash, when a JD is evaluated by County.
It's a lengthy process, fraught with frustration, but we are determined that we will get paid for the job we are doing - on paper, the job looks simple and straightforward, but as we know, what we actually do in the classroom is far from simple and straightforward!
We have been working on getting our JD reviewed for over a year now, and spent many hours of our own time working on it ,but if that's what it takes to get the financial recognition for doing such a responsible job, then so be it!

If your actual pay is £17600 then your pro rata pay would be less, approx £14500. I think what you mean is that £21k is your anual salary which is what you would be getting if you were working full time and not term time only meaning £17600 is what you are getting now which has been pro rata'd from £21k.

Just thought I'd mention it...
