is there any postive things about being a CS???

Postby dworzen » Fri Oct 14, 2011 6:34 pm

Hi,

I have just been invited for an interview, and I thought I'd try and get an idea of what people thought of the role of CS. After reading through some posts, however, it seems that most people don't like the job. This has made me question whether I should be eaving my current job, which is working from home and flexible!!?? My current job isn't what I'd like to be doing, apart from the working from home bit. I have 5 years experience of working with young people, mainly alongside social services & youth offendin, so I have only really worked with challenging young people, which I enjoyed....although it did stress me out towards the end. I have had a break from working with young people, and thought I felt ready to try a new role.
My main concern is whether I end up being treated as a 'dogs body' and looked down upon from other 'teachers'? I havent found many posts, maybe two, where the person is actually happy!
I am now really worried, and not sure if I want the job! I also would like to know the working hours if you're doing 37 per week, is it 8.15am to 4pm? I have two teenagers myself, and don't want to end up rushing about, and having no tie for myself. No one has mentioned the 13 weeks holiday a year, which I thought would be a massive bonus???
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

D

i actually love being a Cover Supervisor although, like every job, it has its ups and downs - more ups than downs thankfully. it can take a long time to 'establish' yourself not only with students but with teaching staff as well but that is all part of the process. A sense of humour and a nerves of steel are major requisites!

Hope your interview goes well - it is worth asking about systems of support, how many other SSus in the team, if you could meet them and what the pay grade is!!

Being a Cs is a very tiring and stressfull job, but if you take each lesson as it comes, it is also a very rewarding job. I have been a Cs for over 7 years and couldn't do it for this long if I was unhappy. My advise to anyone taking on this role is dont take it personally, take each lesson as it comes, relax and stop blaming yourself when you have a bad lesson.

Do all this and the role is great.

Maybe Im lucky as I only work 3 days a week and would feel a bit different if I was doing 5 days per week, because I know by the end of each week I would be exhausted.

Way up what you are losing against what you could get out of this job, but don't think its an easy job, babysitting classes of students who are all going to do what you tell them to, because to start with that won't happen. But over time they get to know you and your lessons change for the better

A CS is a senior position in a private company or public organisation, normally in the form of a managerial position or above. It is also known as corporate secretary.
The CS is responsible for the efficient administration of a company, particularly with regard to ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements and for ensuring that decisions of the Board of Directors are implemented.
If you think you previous experience related to it and you can handle upper level responsibilities then, you should give the interview definitely and it will be a meal for your bright future.

Hi, I also have an interview next week for a cover supervisor job and have almost identical concerns as you. I was made redundant in the public sector cuts in Education as a Connexions Adviser and feel that a couple of days a week may be worth a go as I am recovering from an ongoing illness-(neck problems). I am now really concerned that a lot of folk either 1) do not enjoy their position, 2) do not receive the support they feel they require or 3) feel that the stress of the job outweighs the rewards.
I am seriously thinking of cancelling my interview as I was hoping to ease myself back into education gently...Becoming a Cover Soperviser sounds highly highly stressful! I had liked the idea but maybe the renumeration doesnt balance the demands of the position and how CS are treated by other staff. Should I cancel my Interview
